Luke 15:11-32 tells the story of the son who ran off and spent his inheritance on harlots, and sinned in many ways. He got to a point where he was so broke and so broken in spirit that he went home to confess what he had done, and repay what he lost by being a servant.
I believe Jesus told this parable because God knew we would need reassurance when we turn away from Him and sin.
Sometimes when we do something we know we shouldn't have done, Satan makes us think that we are unworthy of forgiveness. This is a lie! God knows we are sinners, He just wants us to come to Him, confess that we sinned and He is going to hold you in His arms and give you the same unconditional love that father in the story gave his son.
That father was so happy to see his son returning to him he ran to him open arms, and welcomed him home as family, not a servant. God is love, and He is right there with you, arms open, waiting for you to give your problems to Him!
The other brother was upset that the father accepted the brother back after what he had done. As Christians we should never get to a point where we look at someone as unworthy of God's love, for this love is not only for you and me, but for the whole world, and while we are Christians, all Jesus gives is ours, but it is also for others, and we should have the heart to receive all who love Jesus.
My prayer for all who read this is that they never believe the lie that Satan tells believers, that they have done too much to come to God and ask Him to change their life. I pray that everyone who reads this realizes the endless love our Father has for all who cling to Him. In Jesus' Name, Amen!
